The City Council of Icod de los Vinos has opened a popular consultation to find out what type of sand its neighbors want in relation to the maintenance and rehabilitation of the popular San Marcos Beach.

According to Cope Tenerife, the possibility that it be natural, crushed and even, whenever possible, ash from the volcano of La Palma, is being considered, an option that is still unknown as to whether or not it may be viable. All residents over 18 years of age who are registered in the municipality will be able to vote, from July 19 to 23, in a non-binding consultation.

“We will defend what the majority of the people want. Costa insists that we use crushing sand, which will produce an environmental impact, ”said Francis González, mayor of Icod, at Cope Tenerife.

A “Catalan-style referendum” for San Marcos Beach

Gerardo Rizo, councilor of the PSOE in the Icod de los Vinos City Council, considers that this measure is not “protected by any legal norm” recalling that the crushing sand supposes a “transitional and urgent” solution to be able to recover the Playa de San Frames.

On February 4, the CEO of Gestur and general secretary of the Socialists from Icodenses, Juan Miguel Martín Zarza, Juan Miguel Martín Zarza, explained to him in an informal meeting that the sand was crushed, as the engineer later confirmed. Emilio Grande, who participated in the project entrusted to Gesplan. The latter added that this alternative had been proposed after the requirements of Costas and in view of the fact that the environmental impact studies would take some time and he also told him that the possibility of using the ash from the La Palma volcano was being studied.
