SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 30. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Government of the Canary Islands will allocate more budget this year to support new productions for film and television by professionals from the islands.

The call for grants is now open with an item of 1,800,000 euros, almost 30 percent more than last year, for the development and production of feature films, series and shorts.

This has been announced by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Juan Márquez, who points out in a note that “the aspiration of this area of increasing the budget allocated to the production of new audiovisual works has finally been achieved, with which it is hoped to reinforce the good work that the Canarian professionals are doing”.

An investment, he continues, “that joins the almost four million euros allocated since 2019, and that little by little are reaching theaters and festivals, some projects with outstanding international recognition”.

Of the total reserved for this year, 520,000 euros will be allocated to short films and projects in development and 1,280,000 euros to the production of feature films and series, with independent calls.

The term for the first will be open until July 19 and the second until July 21.

Bases are available in www.gobiernodecanarias.org/cultura and also on the website of the Canarian Institute for Cultural Development (ICDC), a collaborating entity in this procedure, www.icdcultural.org

Applications will be submitted exclusively through the telematic management application.

The granting of the subsidies is multi-annual and is part of the Strategy for Cultural and Creative Audiovisual Industries that is implemented through actions by different departments of the regional government.

BASES, DEADLINES AND CRITERIA

The bases of this call repeat the main modifications introduced in 2020 with the intention of improving the effectiveness of the investment.

Therefore, the execution periods will continue to be three years for projects in development and short films (until the end of 2024), and four years for the production of feature films and series (until the end of 2025).

Only production companies registered in the Registry of Audiovisual Companies of the Canary Islands will be able to access them.

In the case of production, the required seniority remains at one year, while for development and short films there is no limit.

AIE (Economic Interest Groups) can also be submitted that include a production company that has a certificate from the Registry of Canarian Audiovisual Companies.

The projects that choose must accredit a sufficient presence of Canarian professionals in certain ‘key positions’ of production.

Other relevant positions -which change depending on whether the project is fiction, animation or documentary- get additional points, but are not a requirement and in the case of development, the key positions are limited to three: executive production, screenplay and direction.

Likewise, the economic solidity of the project is valued, either through co-productions, pre-sales or other contributions, as well as its potential and artistic quality.

This assessment will be carried out by different external committees made up of professionals of recognized prestige and who represent the different film forms that are convened. Likewise, this committee will reflect in its composition the plurality of the audiovisual as an artistic and industrial phenomenon.

Of the three categories that include the two calls, the one corresponding to the development of feature films and series, an option that does not appear in the aid granted by the State, the intensity limit is maintained this year (percentage of total public aid over the total budget ) up to more than 75%, the same as in the production of short films.

In the case of production of feature films and series, the intensity limits established by state law are applied, which maintains them between 50% and 80%.

MORE THAN FOUR MILLION IN THREE YEARS

With this, it is the fourth time that the General Directorate of Culture announces subsidies for the production and development of audiovisual projects. In the 2019, 2020 and 2021 editions, 4,125,000 euros were awarded, most of it for the production of feature films or series (3,093,750 euros).

In total, since 2019, 61 projects have been subsidized, of which 18 are feature film or series productions, 21 are projects in development, and 22 are short films.

Of the feature film or series production projects, 9 are documentaries (with the particularity that one of them is an animated documentary), 4 are animation projects (series and feature films), and 6 are fiction feature films.

Of these 18 feature-length or series productions, the first to be released is ‘Rendir los machos’, David Pantaleón’s feature directorial debut, co-produced by Volcano International Films and the French production company Noodles Productions.
