SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 24. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, a center attached to the Canary Islands Government Health Department, has operated on 30 patients in a complex technique to operate on shoulder fractures, avoiding the implantation of prostheses and increasing bone resistance.
This technique was launched in 2018 with good results, as explained by the head of the Shoulder section, David Valdés García, and the specialist in this area, Javier Pérez Rodríguez, in a scientific publication that was presented at the recent National Congress of the Spanish Shoulder and Elbow Society. In addition, Dr. David Valdés García presented, this year, the results of the technique at the International Shoulder Congress in Biarritz, in France.
The Orthopedic Surgery Service of the Hospital de La Candelaria is conducting a study with the aim of disseminating the results in international publications, since the number of patients operated on is large and diverse, which allows significant conclusions to be drawn.
Humerus fractures often occur in older people who have lost bone mineral density. There are different techniques to perform this procedure, but osteosynthesis of the proximal humerus augmented with a fibular allograft, performed by the hospital, increases the resistance of the reconstruction and reduces the displacement caused by the fracture itself.
These types of fractures tend to move after surgery, so adding a bone to the fibula increases strength and also allows fractures to be reconstructed that would otherwise have to be treated using a prosthesis, that is, a method that replaces damaged joints with artificial joints.
Another benefit of this technique is that real bones are used to avoid extracting the graft from the patient, thus reducing surgical times. During the intervention, fragments of fibula bone are used, increasing resistance to the loads that the shoulder will have to bear later in the patient’s daily life.
The Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria was the first hospital center in the Canary Islands and one of the first in the entire national territory to implement this technique.
