The Proud Lagoon returns to the street. After two years of the pandemic, the municipality will bring the colors of diversity abroad to celebrate, for four weeks, LGBTI Pride Day, which is commemorated every June 28 to make visible the community’s struggle to achieve its rights. Rights.

The presentation ceremony, led by Alex Mercurio and Ceci Wallace, took place yesterday in the Hermano Ramón square. The mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the Councilor for Equality and LGBTI, Idaira Afonso, accompanied by mayors from the Corporation and representatives of the LGBTI Municipal Council, were in charge of announcing the details of this edition, which will start this Friday and will end the 15th of July.

More than a dozen free activities -such as meetings, debate tables and parades- will take place throughout a month to make visible, sensitize and build a joint thought on the right to equality of the group.

Like every June 28, La Laguna celebrates again “a date that represents the struggle of a community that only wants respect and freedom. We are an open, plural municipality, which advances as an example in the visibility and defense of the rights of all, all and all”, said the mayor, to later thank the Department and the groups and people involved for their work during “all these years of vindication, especially during the hardest moments of the pandemic.”

As “even today we can hear messages of involution”, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez stressed that “we must continue to defend the message of Pride, saying no to LGBTIphobia and hate attacks”. To do this, he pointed out that four weeks of events have been prepared for a “very special” edition and encouraged all citizens “to enjoy and participate” in it.

Idaira Afonso expressed herself in similar terms, who thanked the associations of the Council for the work they carry out not only for this date, but throughout the year. In this sense, he recalled that from the City Council, “in a transversal way between the different areas”, continuous work is carried out aimed at “education, visibility and awareness”, which translates “into multiple activities” and that have their “exponential maximum in Pride”. “It is not a party, but it is a celebration to make visible the pride that the different ways of living, expressing themselves and feeling represent for people,” she emphasized.

The four weeks of the program include various meetings and discussion tables, which will feature participants and experts on different topics that seek to raise awareness and generate collective thinking about the right to equality of the LGBTI community.

The agenda will start this Friday, at 12 noon, with the reading of the manifesto in Plaza Hermano Ramón, and will end on July 15, with La Laguna Pride Day. During this last day, people will be able to enjoy parades through the city center, which will culminate in the Plaza del Adelantado. There will be an information area with LGBTI associations, storytellers, an LGBTI literary market, music (with the participation of Mel Ömana), gastronomy and a drag show, among other actions.

Between the two dates, there will be a film forum, round tables on dissidence and diversity in folklore and sport, a workshop on sexuality and gender, a talk to deal in a clear, direct and enjoyable way with all the labels that make up the collective, a meeting with associations, etc.

The program can be consulted through the social networks of the Department of Equality and LGBTI and the City Council of La Laguna, as well as on the Corporation’s website.
