It is forbidden to light bonfires on the 23rd and 28th, the eve of the festivities of San Juan Bautista and San Pedro, respectively. The Natural Environment and Security Area of the Cabildo reported yesterday of such a ban that affects “the entire area at risk of forest fire in Tenerife, which includes all the midlands of the Island, in addition to the rural parks of Teno and Anaga.” The Cabildo declared the alert period for forest fires on the Island from October 13 to 16. Consequently, the Island Government decrees this measure.
In areas outside the forest fire risk zone, where the authorization competence falls on the municipalities, the bonfires may be authorized if they comply with the rest of the applicable regulations, an “authorization that will depend on the local Corporations”.
Firefighters of Tenerife, like every year, will activate a special attention device in the parks of the Island, since this traditional celebration, in which fire is the protagonist, can cause exceptional situations. On a recurring basis, there is usually a notable increase in services due to bonfires that get out of control, are not well finished, generate partying, the burning of polluting elements or incidents associated with increased activity.
