Lhe construction of the new Guaza institute, in Parque de la Reina, will resume shortly after the agreement between the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands and the company Proyecon Galicia SA, responsible for the work, according to the Government of the Canary Islands. The works were suspended “partially and temporarily” last March, affecting some units. The cause was “the modification of the initial project to incorporate a series of improvements.”

Education assured yesterday that the construction company “will soon resume activity in the units that were affected by the modified project.” The objective is that “the students of the old IES – located in Guaza – can be incorporated as soon as possible to the new facilities.” In the statement, the department managed by Manuela de Armas stated that “the families of the students have already been informed.”

Previously, in May of last year, “the partial temporary stoppage of the works affected by the modified project » that Education authorized on the 18th of that month. In January of this year the first meetings between the counseling, the Association of Mothers and Fathers (AMPA) and the management of IES Guaza took place. Since then, the procedures and contacts have followed one another, as well as between the counselor and the company managers.

The General Directorate of Centers, Infrastructure and Educational Promotion reported (May 2020) that the budget of the new Guaza IES increased by 6.5% (around 383,000 euros) to almost 6.3 million. The cause was an agreement reached with Proyecon Galicia, whose counterpart was the inclusion in the project of an elevator, air conditioning in the assembly hall, energy efficiency improvements and expanding the Wi-Fi network, said the general director, María Candelaria González.

More than three years ago

On December 4, 2017, the Ministry of Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands awarded the construction of the Guaza Secondary Education Institute (IES) to the company Proyecon Galicia for 5,885,885 euros. With a capacity for 680 students, it is built on a plot of 13,120 square meters and will have 22 units. Secondary will consist of 18 multipurpose classrooms and two as workshops on Technology, Music, Computer Science, Plastic and Visual Education, Unfolding and Therapeutic Pedagogy. Baccalaureate will have four multipurpose classrooms and one for Computer Science, Drawing and Audiovisual, Multifunctional, Arts, Administration, Languages, Group Split and Plastic and Visual. The center will have a covered sports hall, an auditorium with access to the outside for use as a cultural center for the area, as well as parking spaces for staff in the semi-basement.

The current IES Guaza emerged as an emergency solution 19 years ago, to attend to the demographic explosion that Arona registered at the beginning of this century. After three months of work, it was inaugurated on September 12, 2002, being the first modular educational center built in the Canary Islands. Today it is the only one in Tenerife. At this time, the barracks that make up the center experience great deterioration, presenting serious deficiencies as a result of their prolonged use. The students will start the new year in them with the hope of finishing the school year in the new center.
