The Corpus Christi Sunday It is a long-awaited date The lagoon and Tacoronte, municipalities that after two years of the pandemic recovered the tradition of re-making tapestries and rugs on public roads.

Yesterday, the streets of the historic center of both municipalities were a swarm of families, groups of friends, children from different schools, neighborhood groups and different associations and entities, who shared the same devotion: making rugs with natural elements such as flowers , seeds and heather through which the procession of the Blessed Sacrament later passed.

Unlike other religious events, in the Corpus the carpet makers are the main protagonists, who made an effort so that their designs captivated the public.

The day started early. Adults and children prepared all the necessary elements to be able to work. The municipality of La Laguna contributed 10,000 kilos of marble and 10,000 of ash from the Cumbre Vieja and about 30 paths of black and tan briar, which also served to cover the margins between corridors. In addition, he provided ropes to make the drawings, paper to cover the ground where the sketches were designed, and chalk. Tacoronte did the same with colored earth and snacks.

In Aguere, more than 40 colored rugs invaded the town and in the neighboring municipality there were 90. In the latter, just like for four decades, the artist Juan Fajardo was in charge of making the great central tapestry of the Plaza del Cristo in which the figure of a child stood out through which the Russian invasion of Ukraine could be seen. This scene was made in gray tones, with ash from the volcano of La Palma to also give a message of solidarity with the Isla Bonita. A color that contrasted with those of the Corpus, for which almost four tons of marble were used.

The drizzle in the early afternoon failed to overshadow a day that ended with the passage of the Blessed Sacrament through the carpeted route. In La Laguna, the procession left the Cathedral at 5:00 p.m. and went through the streets of Obispo Rey Redondo, Antonio Zerolo, Herradores, Viana and again Obispo Rey Redondo to return to the starting point.

In Tacoronte he did it two hours later, at 7:15 p.m. from the Santuario del Cristo, and made the usual route through Sebastián Machado, Pasaje Abreu and Teobado Power streets until he reached the hermitage of Santa Catalina.
