The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (involcan) has registered during the early hours of this Friday a seismic swarm “of low magnitude under the Teide volcano“.
In an interval of just two hours, at least 300 earthquakes have been identified. It is an episode with “very similar characteristics” to those recorded on October 2, 2016 and June 14, 2019.
Involcan explains that the most likely origin of the swarm is the movement of fluids such as steam, gas or water inside the Teide hydrothermal system.
“This swarm does not imply a greater probability of an eruption in the short or medium term, but it does remind us that Tenerife it is still a volcanically active island,” he adds.
