El Rosario gets on the bandwagon of energy communities. The Rosario Solar is the name of the initiative that is taking its first steps in the municipality and that recently celebrated its founding act at the Casa de la Cultura, in La Esperanza. Is about an entity “constituted as an association participated, jointly, by companies, citizens and the City Council of El Rosario”as reported from the Rosariero Consistory.

The implementation of this initiative is in line with the European Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Sustainable Energy (Paces), which was signed by the City Council. This brings together thousands of local governments that “voluntarily commit to implement climate and energy objectives of the European Union”, includes the exhibition with which the action was presented and made known.

Specifically, fifteen private residents from the Costanera and El Chorrillo communities participated in the event, as well as companies from the Polígono de La Campana: Atlantic Tires, El Gusto por el Vino, La Esperanza Impresores, Isleñas Industries and Distributions, Etelcan, Comercial Abona, Galloway and Green Efficient Solutions. The presentation ceremony was chaired by the mayor of El Rosario, Escolástico Gil (IR-Greens), and included a presentation by the Councilor for Ecological Transition, Fidel Vázquez (SSP).

A key objective is the reduction of polluting emissions from fossil fuels

More in detail, El Rosario Solar will consist of the design of a series of rooftop photovoltaic installations for collective self-consumption in the Polígono de La Campana. «With an available area of 154,200 square meters and a total power to be installed of ten megawatts, the renewable energy generating activity located on the roofs can be consumed in the industrial warehouses of the estate and in nearby residential areas such as Costanera, El Chorrillo and San Isidro, as well as allocating the surpluses to the sale of energy until the recovery of the investment made is completed, ”the El Rosario City Council stated about the initiative.

“This initiative is born now, but it is open to everyone,” said Vázquez, while the mayor described the action as “firm and determined” “to comply with the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Sustainable Energy.” And it is that the objective is to promote “the reduction of emissions from generation systems using fossil fuels, which, today, dominate the island’s electrical system.” They believe that the local use of surpluses will also be increased; Losses due to transmission and distribution activities will be reduced, as well as the need for new medium and high voltage lines, and “qualified and stable jobs together with strong social involvement” will be created.
