There is no one to stop it. Despite the fact that the incidence of Covid does not end up leaving our lives, it is clear that we have decided to get rid of the belt of it and enter normality. A normality such as celebrating the Day of the Canary Islands in the best way and in different ways, for which, for example, the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife yesterday had a program of events worthy of its best parties, as the culmination of a May as significant as the month of the foundation of the capital of Tenerife.

Thus, chicharreros, people from Tenerife and visitors from all over the world were able to enjoy yesterday a large number of cultural, sporting, gastronomic and folkloric events for all ages, which concluded with a great concert by Los Sabandeños in the Plaza de La Candelaria, which They had notable guests, such as the tenor from Santa Cruz Celso Albelo or the singer from Lanzarote Almudena Hernández. Elfidio Alonso wanted to thank “the treatment that this city has had and that it has been a great pride to be able to perform before thousands of people”.

Starting on Friday, the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena hosted the AgroCanarias Fair, which brought together 46 exhibitors of agri-food products and 10 of gastronomy. In addition, there was a Market space where local products could be purchased and a children’s area with sports and traditional Canarian games, a garden and a farm, as a nod to that primary sector that, oddly enough, also exists within the limits of the municipality of Santa Cruz. from Tenerife.

In addition, both Sunday and yesterday the Traditional Gastronomy Fair was held, which brought together a total of 11 tents with a selection of food made with zero kilometer products in the La Noria street environment. All these samples of Canarian gastronomy and folklore of our islands were seasoned with music of all genres. Likewise, gastronomy had a special date with the return of the traditional Typical Food Contest, which opened its doors to the public at 2:00 p.m. in the Plaza de la Iglesia de la Concepción, one hour after the awards ceremony, in which It was distinguished for the best table presented, the best rabbit in salmorejo, the best fish casserole, the best dessert or the best liquor. The festive day continued with more folk music, something that was felt not only in La Noria, but in almost the entire historic center of the capital of Tenerife, under a radiant sunny day and without the threat of rain becoming effective.

Yesterday there was also an emotional act with the delivery by the mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, replacement from COVID, of the 2022 Canary Islands-Ciudad Santa Cruz Award to CD Tenerife. The second vice-president of the blue and white entity and coordinator of the Centennial Program, Milagros Luis Brito, recognized “it is a great joy that the City Council recognizes us with such an important award on a day like the one in the Canary Islands and comes to validate the marriage between Santa Cruz and the Club Deportivo Tenerife, which is about to turn 100 years old”. Likewise, she added that “this city is the home of Tenerife”.

Old cars

The great novelty this year on Canary Islands Day in the capital was the presence of twenty of the best-preserved vintage cars in Tenerife. Vehicles registered between 1922 and 1939 that toured the city from the García Sanabria park to the Real Club Náutico, with an exhibition for one hour in the Alameda del Duque Santa Elena, which impressed locals and foreigners alike, demonstrating once again the great automobile heritage that the Island has and that keeps alive the owners of these motorized jewels and the Tenerife Antique Car Club, which celebrates its 52nd anniversary this year and which usually carries out this emotional outing on Carnival Piñata Sundays. The success of yesterday was such that its president, Abel Febles, already plans to repeat this date for next year.

Thus, 51 editions of the contest were completed, one less than those held by the Tenerife Antique Automobile Club, as it could not be held in 2021 due to the pandemic. Of the club’s 52-year history, almost half of it has been chaired by Abel Febles, a car enthusiast from a very young age until it became almost a way of life, receiving several cars as an inheritance and rescuing many others from oblivion. until accumulating, between old and classic, fifteen almost exclusive models, such as the Overland that he drove again yesterday, together with twenty vehicles, between Ford A, Chevrolet or Cadillac, when the first cars arrived in the Canary Islands, almost without roads , they did it from the United States, which in the end has left a heritage of incalculable value, as Councilman Dámaso Arteaga acknowledged yesterday, who represented the City Council at the final ceremony.
