The local group of Amnesty International in Tenerife has been actively involved in supporting the Ukrainians who have arrived on the island, carrying out activities at its headquarters in Santa Cruz to facilitate the integration of Ukrainians displaced by the Russian invasion of their country who have been temporarily welcomed in Tenerife.
Among other things, Amnesty International organizes activities to teach the Spanish language to several dozen Ukrainians who have arrived in Tenerife in recent months fleeing the war, thereby facilitating their integration process.
Since Russia invaded southern and eastern Ukraine on February 24, millions of people have been forced to begin a forced exodus fleeing the war ravaging their country. The vast majority of them have been distributed throughout various countries of the European Union in a diaspora not seen on the continent since the times of the Second World War.
The Ukrainian community in Tenerife has multiplied its efforts to welcome several hundred compatriots, counting from the first moment on the solidarity of Canarian society. “We are very grateful to the whole of Canarian society. Since all this began, Russia has been bombing our country daily, destroying entire cities and making life impossible in most of our country,” says Andriy Zubenko, a Ukrainian who has lived half his life in Tenerife.
“Many of our compatriots have had to start a painful flight from the war to save their children. Most of those who have had to leave Ukraine are women with their children, because most of the men of fighting age and many women without children have stayed to defend our country,” he adds.
Andriy Zubenko says that they have organized themselves to facilitate the integration of their fellow refugees and many entities are actively helping them. “From the political parties, the various social and private associations, we have only perceived and received the full support of Canarian society. Amnesty International in Tenerife is a good example of this, helping us to teach the language to many Ukrainian women and their children” , stands out.
