GRANADILLA (TENERIFE), 25 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, announced this Wednesday that the future new Tenerife Sur airport terminal will begin to be built from 2026, charged to Aena’s DORA III program, and with a budget greater than 300 million.

In a speech given on the occasion of the inauguration of the airport expansion works, he commented that slightly more than 8 million have been included in DORA II for the drafting of the project for the new terminal and other complementary works and will be put out to tender soon.

This project, he commented, involves both internal and external remodeling in search of a “new functionality” that “symbolizes” the island’s way of welcoming tourists, and he has valued that it has been achieved thanks to the “support and consensus “of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Tenerife.

Sánchez has pointed out that it is about achieving a “modern, quality and sustainable” airport that must “meet up” with tourism, which is the main economic sector in the Canary Islands.

The minister, who has recalled that her highest priority is to guarantee connectivity and erase the barriers imposed by the 1,800 kilometers that separate the Canary Islands from the Peninsula, has reported that Aena has invested 160 million euros during the 2017-2021 period in this airport, both in the expansion of the terminal, and in the adaptation of the rest of the infrastructures and processes.

The expansion presented this Wednesday is the largest in the history of the airport, to which Aena has allocated an investment of 64.9 million euros.

The incorporation of these facilities will allow the terminal area to be increased by 50,000 square meters and reach a capacity to handle a volume of 16 million passengers per year.

This extension, according to the minister, has focused an important part of Aena’s efforts during DORA I on Canarian airports, in which investments have reached 428 million euros and with which it has exceeded 9 % of the initially planned investment.

Now, DORA II, already underway, not only provides for a regulated investment volume of 171 million euros, but also incorporates a total of 22 service quality measurement indicators, including six environmental indicators, associated with the Action Plan Aena climate.

This plan will make it possible to achieve carbon neutrality in 2026 and zero emissions in 2040, well ahead of the goals of the Paris Agreement.

THE SURFACE INCREASES BY 55%

In Tenerife Sur, the area increases by 55%, going from 90,000 square meters built to 140,000, check-in counters go from 86 to 118 and there will be 18 inspection lines, three more than the original control, which will be dismantled.

In this way, the entire process will be centralized in the connecting building between the terminals and at the same level as the check-in and boarding area, avoiding the passenger having to travel to a higher floor until now.

This work will involve the integration of the entire airport terminal area, both from an architectural point of view and with the environment itself.

Among the improvements planned, and pending the drafting of the final project, are the reorganization and execution of new car parks and accesses; a review of urbanization and landscaping; the adequacy of the baggage claim room; the expansion of the check-in and boarding areas or the incorporation of more commercial services.

ROAD AGREEMENT

The minister has also referred to the new addendum to incorporate an additional 407 million euros to the road agreement.

With this measure, the total investment is increased from 1,200 to 1,607 million until 2027 and the judicial dispute of the previous PP Executive is resolved.

In addition, it has reported that emergency works have begun on the island of La Palma for the construction of the new route over the volcanic flows that provisionally restores the LP-213 between Puerto Naos and Tazacorte, where a section will also be conditioned of road not affected by the volcano between Tazacorte and Los Llanos de Aridane to connect the nodes of the current road network that allow absorbing and distributing the traffic that now moves to the western fringe of the affected area and thus the functionality of the emergency work is complete.

He has said that it is an investment by the Ministry of close to 40 million euros and with which the commitment to collaborate in restoring the damage caused by the eruption of Cumbre Vieja is fulfilled.

The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has assessed that the extension of Tenerife Sur will allow a capacity of up to 15 million passengers per year and has highlighted the agreement reached with the Ministry and Aena to project a new terminal. “We are solving problems,” he said.
