The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has reiterated his rejection of the installation of regasification plants in the Islands whose main destination is the supply of natural gas to homes.
This was stated in response to a question from the spokesperson for the Parliamentary Group of Nueva Canarias, Luis Campos, about the fourth additional provision of Royal Decree-Law 10/2022, of May 13, which provides that the Canary Islands will have the power to plan of gas in the Islands.
In his response, Ángel Víctor Torres stated that the Government of the Canary Islands is “clearly” committed to renewable energies and not to city gas or gas piping; but only for consumption of thermal power plants, high consumption and ports and ships.
For his part, deputy Luis Campos made it clear that NC does not share the president’s view and stated that the new wording of the fourth additional provision “continues to raise serious doubts.”
Luis Campos emphasized that Nueva Canarias’ position is one of “clear rejection” of gas and announced that his party is going to present amendments in Congress requesting the suppression of the additional provisions of both decrees.
Campos stressed that the Canary Islands already have powers in energy matters for the installation and authorization, so he sees that nuance that is included in the additional provision, which “does not contribute anything new”, is “unnecessary”.
He also expressed concern that this is taking place in a convulsive context in which Europe has followed a logic that is limited to “whitening” gas as a green energy along with nuclear energy, when gas is “a fossil fuel, highly polluting scarce and not cheap”.
