The Cabildo de Tenerife receives this week a delegation of representatives from the Dominican Republic, headed by the Minister of Youth, Rafael J. Féliz García, and the Director of International Cooperation, José Luis Morillo, with the aim of establishing alliances and future lines of collaboration, mainly linked to the primary sector.
This visit, led by the delegated area of Foreign Action, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, is part of the international cooperation strategy that the Island Corporation has been developing.
The CEO of Foreign Action, Liskel Álvarez, explained that the objective is to establish the bases “to intensify collaboration between both regions, taking advantage of the knowledge and techniques that Tenerife applies in relation to agricultural and livestock transformation and the production of certain crops” .
Álvarez added that the purpose of this visit “is also the internationalization not only of business, but of knowledge” and recalled that the Dominican Republic “is among the ten largest economies in Latin America, which is an attraction for investment from the country to the island. “.
For his part, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, explained that the objective of this official visit, which began on May 21 and will last until May 25, is to publicize “the practices and experiences in livestock production, in the planting of the grape and the winemaking that we develop on the island, so that they can replicate them in their country”.
In this sense, Parrilla stressed that Dominican viticulture, being a tropical viticulture, “shares some characteristics with Tenerife viticulture, which would allow establishing various types of collaboration”, and announced that they are going to mediate for the export of wines from the Island to the Caribbean country.
In the field of livestock, the island councilor explained that as a result of the problems faced by livestock farms in the Dominican Republic, the delegation “is interested in the introduction of goats and sheep from Tenerife as a way to promote the country’s livestock recovery.”
In addition to the Minister of Youth and the Director of International Cooperation, the delegation is made up of the Executive Director of the National Grape Institute, José Santos Manzueta; the mayor of Neiba, José Darío Cepeda; the president of the Neiba Grape and Wine Producers Cooperative, Teófila Feliz, and the consul of the Dominican Republic, Katia Castillo, among other authorities and managers.
Throughout today’s morning, the Dominican delegation has visited several farms of tropical crops such as avocado, the agricultural product with the highest growth in Tenerife in the last ten years, and an important crop for the Dominican Republic.
Subsequently, a guided visit was made to the Insular Office of the Irrigator and to the Experimental Farm La Quinta Roja, in Garachico, in which they were able to witness various experimental trials in banana plantations, the efficiency of irrigation systems and experiments in biological control of pests and diseases. of this crop. Previously, last Saturday they visited several wineries in the northern and southern regions of the island. Specifically, Bodegas Monje, Altos de Trevejos, Cumbres de Abona and Bitsa.
