SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 17 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Prosecutor’s Office of the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has filed the investigation proceedings opened against the Bishop of Tenerife, Bernardo Álvarez, for an alleged hate crime, ‘Radio Club Tenerife’ has advanced this Tuesday.

The case came to the Prosecutor’s Office as a result of some statements on a ‘Televisión Canaria’ program in which he said that homosexuality was a “mortal sin” if practiced consciously and also compared it to alcoholism.

These statements provoked the condemnation of many public institutions, such as the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Tenerife or the regional Parliament, and a signature campaign opened by the LGTBI Diversas collective has accumulated more than 58,000 supporters requesting his dismissal.
