SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 14 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –

La Gomera has closed the cruise season with the arrival of more than 70,000 cruise passengers at the ports of San Sebastián and Vueltas in Valle Gran Rey, which represents a 28% growth in the number of passengers on board these ships compared to the 2020/2021 season.

The president of the Cabildo, Casimiro Curbelo, positively valued the development of this last cruise season, “which has shown the consolidation of this tourist segment for the Island and which has managed to overcome the difficulties linked to the pandemic.”

In this sense, the island leader explained that there were 120 ships that arrived at the ports of La Gomera -114 to San Sebastián and 6 to Valle Gran Rey- in the planned cruise calendar, which is 300% more than the previous season.

He also highlighted the potential and growing demand for La Gomera as a destination for this tourist segment, as well as the interest shown by shipping companies for the docking of ships on the Island.

“A true reflection of this is the large number of cruise ships that have arrived at our ports for the first time this year, and the fact that there are already some arrivals closed for the months of August and September, even before the new season,” he added.

For his part, the Island Councilor for Economic Development, Miguel Melo, emphasized the economic impact that cruise tourism has for the Island, since, “although tourists only spend a few hours on the Island, during their stay they purchase products in small local businesses and hires services from island transport, guide and restaurant companies”. In addition, he explained that during this season the average cost per tourist is around 30 euros per person per day.

During this last cruise season, the Cabildo de La Gomera has carried out different initiatives coinciding with the arrival of ships to the island, in order to promote tourist spending in local companies and boost the island’s commercial fabric, among which the celebrations of different handicraft shows in the municipalities and itinerant points of sale, the insular handicraft fair and Exposaldo, as well as the provision of information stands of the Alimentos de La Gomera brand stand out.
