Torres vindicates useful politics in the face of the “hustle and bustle” of other parties

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 14 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The general secretary of the PSOE and president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has urged the socialist mayors to move away from the noise and anger that are so conditioning political activity and focus on management that seeks to improve the lives of the social majority. “What people want from us is that we solve their problems. The other thing, the hubbub, the noise and the scandal, is not politics,” he said.

In a meeting with the councilors of the Canarian PSOE in the different islands, held this Friday at the headquarters of the Socialist Association of La Laguna, in Tenerife, Torres recalled that he began this legislature with the aim of turning the Government of the Canary Islands “into the city council of the seven islands”, in the same way that today his wish is that any mayor can feel reflected in him, since “deep down the reality is similar: knowing the local problems and looking for solutions in the field of eight islands.

The leader of the Canarian Socialists has pointed out that before and now the priority has been to work for the social majority, in favor of equality and rights, being aware that there is barely a year left for the next elections and it is time to “strengthen the policies carried out and value everything that we have placed at the forefront of our government actions”.

“It is a pity – he continued – that the anger, the insults and the disagreements have taken over political activity, especially in the Congress of Deputies, so it is important that those of us who govern do not forget that we are here to improve people’s lives,” he stressed.

In this sense, he highlighted the work of the Government of Spain, with recent measures such as disaffecting gas from the price of electricity, the gasoline bonus, the brake on the rise in rental housing prices, the aid lines for the most vulnerable sectors or the labor reform, which has made it possible to promote indefinite contracts.

“That is the important thing,” said Torres, who has also been proud of the actions of his regional Executive, such as the first public and free places for education from zero to three years, announced this week and planned for the next academic year, or the first public housing development in the Canary Islands in eight years, already under development in the Gran Canaria town of Ingenio.

“If the Government that arrives solves the problems, we are going to recognize it; it is justice”, he said regarding the solution given by his Government to the Canarian Highways agreement, “a long-term conflict inherited from the PP stage in Moncloa and CC at the head of the Government of the Canary Islands”.

For Torres, there is no doubt that the Flores Pact will be able to present better data on health, education or social welfare at the end of this legislature than those it received in 2019. He has also cited the “enormous effort” that is being made in La Palma to respond to all the inconveniences generated by the volcanic crisis, “an unprecedented deployment of public resources; nothing to do, for example, with the aid for the temporary Delta of the then Government of the Canary Islands. Some took years to arrive and others never did,” he recalled.

Torres considers that with so many adversities and setbacks they have not had the normalized time to work on a legislative project. “That’s why we need four more years.” And he has concluded by stating that the objective for the 2023 elections is none other than “the double g: win and govern.”
