Lidl and Bandera Azul make schoolchildren aware of microplastics

Some 200 students from the International Costa Adeje and British School Tenerife schools have participated in beach cleanups organized by the Lidl supermarket chain and the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac), which coordinates the Ecoescuelas and Blue flag in Spain thanks to the environmental education project that both entities are developing throughout the school year. A total of 400 students from four Canarian educational centers participate in this initiative, a pioneer in the Islands.

Since its launch in October, schoolchildren have worked with educational materials designed for this project in order to become familiar with the problem of microplastics, learn how they affect Canarian biodiversity and health, and discover the possible solutions that can be found. address individually and collectively. The project culminates this spring with the cleaning of several beaches, in which students see first-hand the consequences of the problem of microplastics on the coasts.

On Monday, the cleaning of the beaches of Fañabé and La Enramada, in the south of Tenerife, took place, in which the students of the Costa Adeje International School participated, with the participation of the Councilor for Tourism of Adeje, Adolfo Alonso. Likewise, the cleaning act carried out on Tuesday at the Charco de la Araña beach, in the town of Los Silos, in the north of the Island, was attended by the mayor of the municipality, Macarena Fuentes, the Councilor for the Environment, Antonio Rodríguez, the director Blue Flag, Ana Pérez-Montero, and the regional director of Lidl in the Canary Islands, Luis González.

According to Luis González, “what has attracted us most about this project from the beginning has been being able to work directly with schools and raise awareness and educate from school on environmental care. And for this, ADEAC and its Eco-schools and Blue Flag programs have been the best partner we could have to do it. It is clear that we cannot look the other way because It is a problem that affects us all and that puts the natural wealth of our Islands at risk.”
