SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 13 May. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Government of the Canary Islands has expressed this Friday its strongest rejection and condemnation of the sexist murder of Clotilde, 82, allegedly murdered on May 11 by her 83-year-old husband, in the municipality of Arona, in Tenerife.
Both the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, who presided over the event at the headquarters of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as well as the Minister of Equality, Noemí Santana, and the director of the Canary Institute for Equality (ICI), Kika Fumero, in front of the headquarters of the Presidency in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, conveyed their most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim on behalf of the entire Government and read the manifesto of condemnation.
According to the manifesto, “today we have to make visible and denounce one more murder, and while this continues to happen, we will be obliged to recognize that we still have a long way to go. Once again, we launch our message of resounding rejection of violence macho in all its manifestations and our commitment to equality”.
Thus, the Government of the Canary Islands is committed to continuing to focus its efforts on taking effective measures against gender violence, as well as influencing profound changes that lead us towards the eradication of sexist violence, so that “one day we can say that the machismo, violence against women and the violation of their rights are things of the past”.
Clotilde is the first woman murdered by sexist violence this year in the Canary Islands and the 99th victim since the calculation began in 2003 according to Law 16/2003, of April 8, on Prevention and Comprehensive Protection of Women against Gender Violence in the Canary Autonomous Community.
The murder of Angelines in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, allegedly at the hands of her nephew, is still under investigation and pending confirmation by the Canarian Institute for Equality.
At the state level, and with the last update made this Thursday by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, there are already 1,144 women killed by gender violence in the couple since 2003.
In April, the SAMVV 1-1-2 Service for Women Victims of Violence, financed by the ICI, registered 13% fewer calls than in the same month last year, but represented the highest number of activations (149) in the emergency devices that the ICI maintains with the councils (DEMA) and also the highest number of women, 33 with 10 children, who had to leave their home to protect themselves from their abuser and receive emergency shelter in these device
