Santa Cruz asks to investigate the origin of the hydrocarbons on the beaches. | Fran Pallero

The mayor of Santa Cruz of Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, has requested this Wednesday the Government of the Canary Islands and the State Administration in Tenerife, Coasts, Maritime Captaincy and Port Authority, to urgently investigate the origin of hydrocarbon residues found this week on the beaches of Almáciga, Benijo and Roque de Las Bodegas.

Three beaches located in the Anaga area that were forced to close your bathroom spaces of the municipality, the City Council has informed in a statement.

Bermúdez has insisted that it is essential to know the origin of the spills and has pointed out that, in the case of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, they have affected an area of special environmental value whose conservation is the responsibility “of all administrations.”

“The protocol for these cases was activated immediately, closing the beaches to the bathroom, proceeding to the cleaning of said remains. If these cases occur again, the damage to the marine ecosystem in the area can be considerable, without leaving aside the damage to businessmen in the area, in the event that we are forced to close these bathing areas again ” , has said.

In addition, it has shown its concern that these spills have appeared on beaches in other municipalities such as Candelaria and Güímar.
