The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, announced this Tuesday that he will request the support of the plenary session of the institution for the award of the Tenerife Gold Medal to the swimmer Michelle Alonso, who last Sunday won the gold medal in the modality of 100 meters breaststroke for the third consecutive edition in the Paralympic Games and managed to beat his own world record.
Martín, who has communicated his proposal to the 27-year-old swimmer by telephone, argues that this honorary distinction is “more than deserved, her record and sports career, her desire for effort and sacrifice, in addition to her humility, make her worthy of this distinction, after having reiterated that it is capable of surpassing itself and that it is the best in the world in its category “.
The president will receive the athlete at the headquarters of the island institution after his arrival at the Tokyo 2020 Games, where he set his new world record in the 100-meter breaststroke at 1: 12.02.
“There is no doubt that Michelle is one of the best athletes in the history of Tenerife and the Canary Islands. She represents all the values of island sport and that is why this Cabildo must honor her as she deserves,” she says in a note .
Michelle Alonso Morales is an international sports reference and has become an example of overcoming, achieving that adapted swimming gained greater repercussion not only thanks to her Paralympic, world and continental titles, but also by becoming the first woman swimmer with a disability intellectual to participate in a RFEN Absolute Spanish Championship, far exceeding the barriers that he has encountered, in favor of inclusion.
Alonso was born on March 29, 1994 in Tenerife and in addition to winning three golds at the Paralympic Games and surpassing his own world record, he has managed to consolidate himself in international sport, maintaining the highest level of competition for the last twelve years, which means has led to receiving distinctions such as the Royal Order of Sports Merit, awarded by the Higher Sports Council in 2013.
