Only the masks that dotted the crowd that walked the Rambla de Santa Cruz and the García Sanabria park reminded us that we are still convalescing from a pandemic that, for two years, paralyzed any type of festive gathering in the streets of the capital. Yesterday, the school crosses and those of the institutions and companies, which are traditionally displayed on the Rambla and Paseo de Las Tinajas, were once again the perfect excuse for families to decide to stroll through Santa Cruzleaving some to eat or have a drink, others to visit the García Sanabria park or others, simply, to recover some of the lost time.

The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, congratulated himself yesterday on what has been achieved with these post-pandemic May Festivities. “We have recovered our traditional May festivities, with a great magician’s dance that we celebrated last night (on Monday) and today our recycled crosses, not only on the Rambla, but in our neighbourhoods, demonstrating that we continue to uphold the traditions” , said.

A tradition that was repeated yesterday, with a party going down the Rambla, together with the mayor and his councillors, with crosses such as the one made in tribute to La Palma, but also those of the municipal districts or companies. In addition, it was possible to enjoy the crosses made with recycled materials, which are surpassed in imagination every year.

Regarding yesterday’s event, the councilor pointed out that “if we have had a historical record of attendance at the magicians’ dance, with 14,000 people, today, both in the García Sanabria park and on the Rambla or in the neighborhoods, I am sure that we are also going to have thousands of people touring the city”. “We are very happy,” he continued, “because this is non-stop throughout the month of May, since we will have activities every weekend in Santa Cruz until Canary Islands Day.”

As detailed by Bermúdez, yesterday’s day was eminently family-oriented, a day to walk and approach the García Sanabria, where the Exhibition of Flowers, Plants and Crafts was closed, in addition to the Canarian gastronomy stalls, in which some hung the “all sold” sign Likewise, the opportunity was taken to make the awards ceremony for the Exhibition, which this year, unlike the previous ones, was brought forward at half past one in the afternoon, and was delivered at the winners’ own stalls.

The big day of the May Festivities ended with the procession of the Foundational Cross, with which it was remembered that Santa Cruz was just 528 years old yesterday since its foundation.
