San Gerardo ‘makes its debut’ on the podium in May with the first prize
The cross of the San Gerardo Neighborhood Association won first prize in the Natural Flowers Contest.

Vanesa Martin, president of the San Gerardo Neighborhood Association, from the neighborhood of La Salud, did not quite believe it. “Have we won?” He asked with suppressed emotion, and then, after receiving the confirmation, burst with joy. And it is that, this year, the winning cross of the Santa Cruz Natural Flower Crossing Contest It was the one in San Gerardo, the first year in which they got an award. Along with that of the La Salud association, in this edition the Tamaragua Cultural Center, which took second place, the Era y el Trigo Neighborhood Association (3rd), the El Roque Neighborhood Association (4th) and the Neighborhood Association of Llano del Moro.

Martín says that last year, although there was a contest, they decided not to participate and use the money from the subsidy provided by the District “for the people who were having the worst time in the pandemic.” For this reason, this year, when neighbors and members of the association have been able to meet again to make the cross, it has been a source of satisfaction and joy.

“We started doing it yesterday (on Monday) at half past six in the afternoon and finished at half past two in the morning. About 15 people were working”, says the president of San Gerardo. In the design they have had the help of Jonathan Suárez and Adrián López.

Martín details that the enrame de la cruz is a party for the association. “We can never go down to the Ball of the Magi because we are doing the cross, so we set up a table here to celebrate it in our own way.”

The crosses were valued by a jury made up of the Craftsmanship technician of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife and maker of flower crosses, Juan Carlos Camacho; the senior technician in Applied Arts, window dresser and expert in floral art, Moisés Norberto Pérez, and the designer and artist linked to the Fiestas de Mayo, Francisco Javier Romero.
