The operation that from Tuesday began the eviction of the Barranco del Agua or Camino de la Virgen, in Adeje, concluded with sixty people who lived there outside the place. The Adeje City Council, through the Community Security and Welfare Area, explained yesterday that it was an action for “the recovery of the natural area, after the illegal settlement of numerous people in booths and other types of constructions that did not meet the conditions minimum security and health. The section of the road affected begins in the Fañabé area and ends in San Sebastián.

The municipal government assured that the intervention “is the result of detailed monitoring and an assessment of the state of the area”, with joint work with Civil Guard, National Police (Immigration section), Local Police, Red Cross, technical personnel from Gesplan and the City Council, who diagnose the situation and define the actions.

From this work it follows that it is necessary to solve “urgently” situations that pose “risk to the safety of people”, by inhabiting places that are not enabled for it, in addition to the fact that there is “a serious attack on the environment , due to the amount of belongings and garbage accumulated throughout the area in an uncontrolled manner.

Identification and assessment

The first action that takes place is the notification and identification of the people who have occupied and settled in the area. The objective is to “assess their housing needs” and define the degree of vulnerability to study aid measures and “offer them alternatives.”

In the first week of April, the 60 identified receive the official communication that they have 10 days to voluntarily leave the place, for breaching the Land and Protected Areas Law of the Canary Islands 4/2007.

On Tuesday, the first day of the operation, the security forces and bodies warned that the majority had left the place, although they left behind a lot of debris and structures. To those who remain, the agents remind them that they have committed an infraction and must leave the area, but some reiterate their will to continue.

For cases of people in vulnerable situations, Red Cross enables a social agent to offer alternative housing resources to those in need and avoid abandonment. The Adeje government reported yesterday that it had offered to relocate two people with vulnerability indexes to municipal resources, one rejecting the proposal and accepting the other, but left the place before being transferred to the accommodation.

In the two days of the device, the troops took 17 minutes for violating the Law of Land and Protected Spaces of the Canary Islands and “due to the serious modification that the environment has suffered” due to self-construction and “the deposit of belongings, waste and garbage causing serious damage to the environment.

The Adeje government affirmed thatThe area is “very deteriorated” due to “the large amount of waste and construction” and by graffiti in the natural and historical heritage. The operation removed more than 12 tons that have been transported to the treatment plant in Arico. “Once the cleaning has been undertaken, the Adeje City Council will proceed with the reintegration of the place to its original state through various plans, which will be developed hand in hand with other organizations,” he assured.
