The Natural Environment Management area of the Cabildo, through the La Tahonilla Wildlife Recovery Center, and the Coastal Action Group are organizing an open day for fishermen from the island and their families so that they can get to know, first hand, the processes of collection, rehabilitation and return to the environment of marine species affected by accidents, the ingestion of microplastics or the effects of drifting fishing gear.

“This activity is very important, because we can share with the people who work in the sea the processes of recovering turtles, among other types of fauna, and make them participate in these actions,” says the councilor Isabel García. She adds that this measure “is added to another such as the distribution of containers in the brotherhoods to deposit recovered turtles until the fauna personnel arrive.”

La Tahonilla will celebrate this initiative on Sunday, May 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Those interested in attending the event can register by sending an email to gactenerife@gmail.com.

“The objective of this meeting is to strengthen ties with the guild, show them the work that is carried out in the facilities and convince them that they are a basic pillar to recover and rehabilitate specimens of turtles or any other marine species that they find during and need specialized attention” , points out Alejandro Suárez, a veterinarian at the center.

Throughout the visit, the staff will show the attendees the infrastructures of La Tahonilla and the specimens that are recovered there, they will be able to see the new facilities for the rehabilitation of sea turtles and, in addition, enjoy a picnic.

Natural Environment and Security, on the other hand, has incorporated 29 unemployed people into its workforce in the course of 2021, through the Tenerife Avanza con NOE project. This is a program that seeks to favor and improve the job prospects of those unemployed who, despite having the necessary training, do not find a job opportunity.
