Granadilla demands “urgently” schools due to the current saturation

The Councilor for Education of the City Council of Granadilla de Abona, Yanira González, described yesterday as “very worrying” the situation of “saturation” of the educational centers in the southern municipality, after receiving the support of the Plenary to approve a motion in which The Government of the Canary Islands is urged to increase the number of school places and educational infrastructure. In statements to this newspaper, González warned about the seriousness of the situation and asked the Ministry of Education to promote the drafting and execution of projects.

“There are intentions, but there are no short-term answers,” said the mayor, who recalled that since 2011 no educational infrastructure has been built in Granadilla, “despite being the third municipality in the Canary Islands with the highest population growth (there are 62,000 people registered), with an average of between 1,000 and 1,200 inhabitants per year”.

Yanira González indicated that the child and youth population exceeds 10,000 places, which makes the creation of new classrooms “urgent”. “Schools are losing educational quality and collective spaces dedicated to computers, library, gym and playgrounds, among other places, are being compromised,” she added.

“The saturation of the centers is a reality both in infant, primary and compulsory secondary education,” González stressed. In the motion approved by the Plenary it is specified that for a decade the City Council ceded land for the execution of a new school in Charco del Pino, of which there has been a project in the Ministry since 2020.

The City Council has also transferred information to the Government of the Canary Islands to expand the places of the CEIP Los Abrigos after in 2018 the Ministry requested land availability in coastal areas of the municipality. In addition, a request has been made to expand the Médano institute, whose project was approved in 2020, carrying out various surveys on the ground to guarantee its viability. The motion also recalls that in 2019 several areas in San Isidro were made available to the Ministry to build new educational centers.

Likewise, the mayor of Education highlighted the demands of the management teams, among which she cited the deficiencies in the construction and the humidity of the CEIP La Jurada and the improvements for the roofs of the schools.
