Institutional agreement to lower public transport fares in Tenerife

The council de Tenerife agrees to lower the fares for the buses and the tram in Tenerife. It articulates it through a unanimous institutional agreement reached at the initiative of the CC-PNC in the Transport Commission prior to the Plenary Session on the State of the Island, which has been postponed from tomorrow to Wednesday, May 4. The consensus document urges the Government of the Canary Islands “to launch immediately and within a maximum period of three months” the study “to apply the necessary mechanisms” in the reduction in the cost of public services of the buses of titsa and the Metropolitano tram. The approved motion also contemplates the implementation of a specific title for unemployed people or those residing on the Island but without registering. It also proposes a reduction in monthly bonuses or extend the free children’s card up to 12-year-olds.

Yesterday, the nationalist councilor Efraín Medina defended an initiative that had the contributions of Si Podemos Canarias, approved unanimously, for “lowering the prices of any type of ticket on public transport on the Island.”

Reduction in bonuses

The motion also contemplates the reduction in monthly titles such as the youth monthly subscription, the Canarian resident bonus, the senior and the monthly bonus for people with disabilities or a significant extension of the expiration periods of the cards. Tickets will also be offered parallel to those of a monthly nature or for very frequent uses intended for the same population, but for occasional trips, applying the discount on each trip.

“Our objective is to help the most vulnerable citizens, those who are in a very complicated situation, since the increase in inflation seriously damages domestic economies and, especially, that of families. In addition, this will also encourage the use of the bus and the tram”, says Efraín Medina.

The CC counselor points out that the Cabildo has sufficient financial resources, “since it has 277 million of euros of remaining money that has not been spent in recent years and can face a reduction in the price of tickets and vouchers for buses and the tram. For the nationalist politician, “it is necessary that all the procedures be streamlined to implement this measure, since there are many people who are having a really bad time.”

The approved text reflects in its second point that “after a period of six months has elapsed since the implementation of these measures” “an assessment of their effect” is carried out and publicly presented.

Finally, the document proposes that when this balance is drawn up, “not only the economic effort” involved in facing these bonus actions for the traveler should be valued, but also “the social and environmental benefits that the measures have provided during that time to the Island and its citizens».
