SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife will open this Thursday a call for aid to promote the practice of crop rotation on the island, endowed with 69,500 euros, with which it is intended to maintain the agronomic quality of the soil, control pests and contribute to the conservation of agricultural biodiversity, favoring local varieties.

The island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, highlights in a note the importance of using techniques such as crop rotation and intercropping, since “they help reduce the use of fertilizers, phytosanitary products and chemical products, which facilitates the pest control such as the Guatemalan moth, creating natural barriers and lowering incidences of damage”.

According to Parrilla, the purpose of this aid is to promote crop rotation in Tenerife, “either in an annual potato-cereal, potato-legume or cereal-legume rotation system, improving the island’s self-sufficiency capacity.”

For his part, the insular director of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Cayetano Silva, emphasizes the need to rotate crops to maintain and improve the quality of the soil and its agricultural biodiversity.

“By rotating the different types of crops, the soil structure is improved, the efficiency in the use of fertilizers supplied to the land is enhanced and the cycle of pests that attack crops is broken,” he explains.

Owners of farms located more than 300 meters above sea level, have a minimum planted area of 2,000 square meters and during the call campaign sow the crops mentioned above will be able to benefit from this aid.

The amount of aid will be 1,000 euros per planted hectare, with a maximum of 3,000 euros per beneficiary. The subsidies will be compatible with other aid, income or resources from other administrations and public or private, national, European and international entities.

The application submission period will remain open for a month starting this Thursday.
