SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 26 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Minister of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, Manuela Armas, said this Tuesday that the proposal to convert the subject ‘History and Geography of the Canary Islands’ into an optional subject is for now a “draft” on the adaptation of the new educational law, although it has defended that they are in favor of the knowledge of this subject “permeating” the entire educational curriculum, “from childhood”.

In response to a question from NC, he has admitted that they may be “wrong” so he has invited the groups to present “contributions” given that with the new law, the autonomous communities are in charge of designing 40% of the contents .

Armas has pointed out that the objective is for students to “know and respect” the most relevant data of their community and their environment and in that sense, a transversal education seemed more “appropriate” and that the subject be optional in competition with ‘Economics ‘.

Deputy Carmen Hernández (NC) has indicated that this debate has “surprised” her because knowledge of one’s “own identity is key” to strengthening the “self-esteem” of a people.

“The Canary Islands need to know their history to love each other,” he indicated, stressing that the “singularities” of the archipelago must be known, such as its passage from the Neolithic to the Modern Age, how its geographical condition determines the economy or biodiversity.

For this reason, he hopes that the Executive “rectifies” and the subject remains compulsory and resources for teachers are “reinforced”.
