SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 25 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the Natural Environment and Security Management office and the Teide National Park management office and the honey exploitation associations that work in the National Park, have agreed on the rules that regulate the beekeeping activity in the protected area during the year 2022.

Between April and October, 2,709 hives may be authorized in the park, to be installed in 18 settlements.

“Last week we held a working meeting at the offices of the Teide National Park with the representatives of the different associations on the island that work with beekeeping, specifically with APITEN, ADS Apícola de Valle de Güímar, ATA, Norte de Tenerife , APITEIDE, ABECAN and ADS ABECAN, with whom we have reached consensus on the rules that will regulate the activity this year”, the Minister of Natural Environment Management, Isabel García, has indicated in a note.

In this regard, the counselor recalled that beekeeping is traditional in the park “and is part of its own cultural heritage, which dates back many years and is included in the Master Plan for the Use and Management of space.”

These regulations establish that hives can only be installed in a series of settlements located in the park.

In this way, the specified places are El Sanatorio, the Pedro Méndez ravine, Montaña Mostaza, Llano de Maja, Barranco de la Arena, Llano del Chupadero, Morra Blanca, Montaña Majúa, Los Cedros de Icod, Cueva de la Herradura, Refuge of Montaña Limón, El Cerrillar, El Roquito, Llano La Rosa, Cañada del Cedro, Cuesta de la Fortaleza, Lomo de Chío and Los Temporadas.

Locations belonging to the municipalities of Guía de Isora, La Orotava, Icod de los Vinos, San Juan de la Rambla and even the Cabildo de Tenerife.

In total, 2,709 hives may be authorized and the use may be made from May 4 to October 23.

Authorization to carry out beekeeping in the National Park may only be requested by those natural persons, residents of Tenerife, who are owners of beekeeping operations registered and updated in the register of livestock farms in the Canary Islands, who have carried out the health program or the official sanitation of the hives.

Beekeeping in the area of the National Park is considered a traditional use, which is why the maximum number of hives that a beekeeper can install is limited to 150.

The dates for submitting applications for the realization of beekeeping are set from April 26 to May 27.
