The collection of organic waste increases 12,000 kilos in March

The results of the domestic waste collection service this year continue to improve. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, through the concessionaire company Valoriza SA, highlights the 17.4% increase in organic matter removed during the month of March. This waste exceeds 85,000 kilos recovered, with an increase of more than 12 tons compared to the figures reached in February.

The Councilor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, highlights the campaign for the selective separation of organic matter that is being carried out by the Municipal Corporation and, in addition, highlights that the collection of recyclable waste has increased by 9.6%, both with 361,060 kilos of paper and cardboard waste as with the 250,800 kilos added by light packaging.

In the analysis of the data, it is also perceived that the collection of medical waste has increased compared to previous months. Specifically, 4.9% more than last February. “The management of this waste is a responsibility of our society for the benefit of protecting public health and the environment,” says Tarife.

As for the furniture and household items recovered by the service provided by Valoriza, in March they removed 277,920 kilos from public roads, which is equivalent to a reduction of 9.3% compared to the previous month. The councilor clarifies that this statistic includes both those that are dumped in an uncontrolled manner and those collected at the City Hall service, thanks to the fact that the neighbors requested it in advance through a call to 922224849.

Another value that the Councilor for Public Services highlights is the collection of 45,310 kilos of organic vegetable waste (51.5% more than in February), from biodegradable waste such as vegetable remains that are removed in daily cleaning. This action enhances the saving of energy and resources for its disposal, while at the same time making a contribution to the reuse of raw materials.

Carlos Tarife distinguishes that in March they came to collect 9,400 kilos of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), 93.4% more than what was obtained during the previous month. Likewise, the service recovered 2,112 liters of used oil in that period, thus adding 6,951 liters collected in the elapsed time of this year. The councilor details that the collection of oil is becoming an indicator to which it is intended to aspire together with the rest of the waste to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda.

Finally, after the fall of the waste deposited in the gray container or the rest fraction during the month of February, in March they reached 5.9 million kilos. “The firm commitment, both by institutions and citizens, to reduce the remainder shows a great advance towards a more sustainable city”, declares the Councilor for Public Services.
