May-Holidays-2022
The program of the Fiestas de Mayo 2022 returns to festive normality

The program of the May 2022 Festivities of Santa Cruz, organized by the City Council through the Autonomous Organism for Festivities and Recreational Activities, returns to festive normality, including a wide range of activities that will emphasize the Canarian nature of all its manifestations: leisure, sports, cultural and artistic.

The Flower Clock of the García Sanabria park yesterday hosted the presentation of the program, which was chaired by the mayor of the city, José Manuel Bermúdez, accompanied by the councilors of Fiestas, Alfonso Cabello; from the Centro-Ifara district, Guillermo Díaz Guerra, and from Security, Evelyn Alonso. The presentation featured the performance of Besay Pérez and Diego Expósito.

The mayor recalled that “last year we lived a holiday with restrictions with a complicated program, which made us make risky decisions. Courageous decisions that made the rest of the municipalities of the Canary Islands imitate us, such as the start-up of the stable cultural venue”. “Three years later Santa Cruz celebrates its founding festivities with a program that returns to normal,” he emphasized.

For his part, the Councilor for Fiestas stressed that, “with the proclamation of Juan Cruz in the church square of La Concepción, four consecutive weekends begin with street activities in our city.” He also emphasized that “we have recovered the Dance of the Magi on Calle de La Noria and La Concepción. The García Sanabria park returns with its exhibitions of flowers and plants, crafts, concerts and Los Gorgoritos return to their usual location. And the concerts return to the Plaza de La Candelaria”.

The festivities start this Friday with the traditional reading of the proclamation by the journalist Juan Cruz, and under the title Ay, Santa Cruz, which will take place in the Plaza de La Concepción at 9:00 p.m., symbolizing the return of the founding festivities to their original space. This opening act will feature a musical performance by Althay Páez.

Meanwhile, the following Friday, the 29th, the Election Gala of the Queen of the May Festivities will take place at 9:00 p.m. on the stage located in the Plaza de La Candelaria. There will finally be a total of 35 candidates, after expanding, exceptionally, the quota of applicants, given the high demand registered. The act, presented by Elvis Sanfiel and directed by Javier Caraballero, will feature a representation of the best voices of the Islands.

Likewise, a day later, the same stage will host, at 7:00 p.m., the 10 girls and 5 boys who will participate in the Magician and Children’s Magician Election Gala. Meanwhile, on May 2, at 7:00 p.m., the traditional offering to the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands will take place at her monument in the Plaza de La Candelaria, and at 9:00 p.m. the Dance of the Magi will begin in its usual urban setting. In this appointment, the Taifa dances and parrandas are recovered, which will be held from 10:00 p.m. on the stages arranged in the Plaza de Europa and in the Campo Castro, enlivened by different folk groups.

El Charco de la Casona will present a popular verbena atmosphere and the performance of different orchestras is scheduled, starting at 11:30 p.m.

Cross day

On the day of the Cross, May 3, starting at 12 noon, the usual tour of the Rambla Crosses Exhibition will take place. At 7:00 p.m. a Eucharist will be celebrated in the church of Nuestra Señora de La Concepción to commemorate the 528th anniversary of the founding of the city, followed by a procession with the Holy Cross through the streets of Santo Domingo, Calzada La Noria and Padre Moore .

Music with a Canarian accent will have a special role with different performances in the Plaza de La Candelaria between May 6 and 27. For example, on May 6, at 8:00 p.m., the Tajaraste Festival will be held and a day later it will be the turn for the XIV Edition of the SON 21 Festival.

Meanwhile, on the 13th there will be the Canarias Urban Fest with the participation of various groups and the XXVII edition of the Santa Cruz Festival, World Heart of Bolero will return to the capital on the 15th. Besay Pérez will offer her concert My history, my songs on the 21st and Olga Cerpa and Mestisay will perform on the 22nd.
