New Canary (NC) face his 5th National Congress with the urgent need to broaden its social and electoral base with a view to the regional and municipal elections of 2023. The president of the formation, Roman Rodriguezannounced yesterday that new alliances are being finalized with local formations of the Islands and with special interest in Tenerife, an island where NC continues without penetrating strongly due to the strong implantation of Canarian Coalition. This is one of the reasons why NC has adapted the term canarianismin order to reach those layers of society that, organized or not, share a common project that defends the increase of self-government and the singular rights of the Islands before the State and Brussels from a progressive perspective. “There will be positive news, we have incorporated Alternative for Antigua with the mayor and his group, the majority of the Municipality of Tejeda and we are working in other areas, we will wait for the results to materialize before making them known, but we have to continue expanding the party in all the islands and especially in Tenerife, as it is the determining island from a demographic point of view, we must continue to improve implementation territory and things are going well,” he said.
CC also enters this canarista space. Rodríguez admitted that NC “is not the only actor in the canary space, there are people who are not organized who must be mobilized and there is also that other nationalist space where the Canarian Coalition moves, with which we do not exclude possibilities of understanding and confluence but on the basis of a program and proposals”. In this sense, the also vice president of the regional government warned that there will be little understanding with CC if it adopts the “opportunist speeches” of the right with the defense of a general lowering of taxes. “They will not find us there, taxation is an essential element to maintain services public and it is a discourse typical of the irresponsible right. The current direction of CC has assumed that discourse”.
The V National Congress of NC started yesterday with the exposition of the management balance of the outgoing Executive by the president of the formation, which was approved unanimously. The leader of the progressive canaristas highlighted the decisive and resolute role in achieving rights, conquests and defense of the general interests of the Canary Islands in the state budget laws of 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022. The promotion of the electoral reform, the Statute and the economic aspects of the Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) in force since November 2018 as well as in the change of the political cycle that, since June 2019, gave rise to progressive majorities that govern in the main public institutions of the Archipelago, in particular the Canary Islands Governmentwhich NC accesses for the first time.
