Rodríguez seeks to revalidate the presidency of Nueva Canarias and grow in Tenerife

The Vice President of the Regional Government and President of New Canary (NC), Roman Rodriguezadvances his intention to revaluate their position in the party during the V Congress that will be held tomorrow and Saturday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with the aim of growing in Tenerife and, in general, in the western province. In a press conference to take stock of his management before the congressional appointment, Rodríguez indicated that the “great subject” of his party is to “expand the electoral base” in La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera and, especially, in Tenerife .

Rodríguez reported that they are in a “dialogue process” with other political forces or groups of voters that, as in Antigua (Fuerteventura) or Tejeda (Gran Canaria), can join NC. In this sense, they will vote on a proposal to reach agreements with other like-minded organizations and people with the aim of once again forming a “broad front” in the May 2023 elections with which to bring together the canarista forcesisland and national.

Thus, Román Rodríguez explained that the first vice-presidency will be occupied by the mayor of Telde, Carmen Hernándezwhile the second vice presidency will go to the mayor of Tacoronte, Daniel Díaz. In total, the Executive will be made up of 72 people and both Carmen Nieves Gasparleader of the party in Tenerife, as the counselor of the Cabildo grancanario Minerva Alonsowill hold the secretariat of self-government and statutory development and economy and SMEs respectively.

During the V Congress, in which 332 delegates from the eight islands will participate, there will also be 15 motions for resolutions related to current affairssuch as those related to the war in Ukraine, the Sahara or issues related to culture, feminism or democracy, according to Rodríguez, who defended that “NC has achieved inconceivable achievements in the General State Budgets of 2017 and 2018”, as the 75% bonus or 100% aid for the transport of goods.

The president of NC also attributed himself to the “unblocking” of the reform of the Statute of Autonomy and the anchoring of the REF “which had been in the drawer for many years and are vital for our economy.” Likewise, Rodríguez recalled the multiple difficulties, from Brexit, the pandemic or the volcano, which they have had to face since they are part of the Canarian Executive, an institution in which, in his opinion, Nueva Canarias has been “decisive ” for the “change of the political cycle” in the islands, with a government supported by progressive forces “after many decades of profiles of conservative governments.”

Rodríguez revealed that at his congressional appointment they have invited all the political forces and numerous actors of society “except the extreme right”, because “we have to exclude them and fight them because they don’t respect anything”. “We are a force cultivated at work, in our neighbourhoods, towns, islands, and we have resisted in difficult times, whether in government or in the opposition,” stressed Rodríguez, who has been “convinced” that in the next legislature they will grow the mayorships of the Canary Islands held by NC. Likewise, NC will modify its statutes so that the internal organs of the party are more operational, the presence of young people is reinforced and the disciplinary regime is simplified, some issues that will be elucidated during the presentation that the Secretary of Organization, Carmelo Ramírez.
