Isabela Atanasiu, representing the General Directorate of Migration and Home Affairs, recognized this Friday that the distribution of migrants is “unfair” among the member states, for which she defends that, in the case of unaccompanied minors, there is a “compulsory solidarity” flexible and adapted to the circumstances.
In a round table organized in the Parliament of the Canary Islands on the occasion of the conference ‘The framework of the European pact on migration and asylum and the situation of unaccompanied migrant children in RUP territories’, he recognized that “practical reception problems” are of concern , especially in the case of the Outermost Regions, which must be “supported”.
In addition, he has indicated that there is a “failure” in the structure of the Migration and Asylum Pact because the role of local authorities has a “very limited” margin to influence decision-making, since the “interlocutor” with the Commission is the Central government.
He has also pointed out that there is a low rate of return of migrants and a “prolonged legal limbo” for those who “cannot be returned”, giving as an example what has happened after the massive entry of people through Ceuta.
Likewise, he pointed out that it is necessary to clearly define “who has to be responsible” for rescues at sea and has highlighted that minors and families with children are exempt from border controls, which allows transfers between the Canary Islands and the Peninsula.
