The Governing Council has authorized the granting of a direct subsidy, for reasons of public interest, to the Municipality of Vilaflor de Chasnain Tenerife, to develop the project ‘La Huerta Grande en Vilaflor: green and productive forest’ for an amount of 578,947.36 euros.
The granting of the subsidy is based on the fact that all the proposed actions are aimed at mitigating climate change through the promotion of a Productive Green Forest, an urban green space that functions as a carbon sink and contributes to reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere. In addition, the Productive Green Forest is proposed as an economic and social catalyst for the municipality, since it combines the offer of leisure and environmental awareness.
This space, in addition to contributing to the improvement of the rural landscape and the sustainability of the territory, promotes good organic farming practices, contributes to rescuing agricultural traditions, favors the employment of unemployed people in the municipality, promotes equal treatment and opportunities for men and women, promotes the agricultural sector, enhances the cultural and religious heritage, by improving a highly visited environment in the municipality, and performs a dual function as an orchard and green area.
The purpose of the direct concession approved by the Government of the Canary Islands is to describe and estimate the works and actions to be carried out for the implementation and transformation of La Huerta Grande, a 12,000 m2 estate located in the vicinity of the historic center of the municipality.
This farm is owned by the City Council of Vilaflor de Chasna and is classified as potentially productive rustic land, although it has not been cultivated since 2017. This subsidy is part of the Strategic Subsidy Plan of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning for the period 2021-2023.
