Victoriano Izquierdo and Luis Febles, president and vice-president of the Canarian Confederation of Neighbors (Concave), met again yesterday, years later. The former, retired as Urbaser’s chief inspector, is already enjoying his retirement in Taganana; the second, retired early, left behind his 28 years in medium and low voltage electrical installations at Cepsa before joining Urbaser and now Valoriza.

Solidarity united them even before the flood of March 31, 2002, when three years earlier they formed the Concave in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Together with Felisa Pacheco Silva Sisa, president of the Federation of Associations of the Anaga Coast (FALA), they accepted the challenge posed by EL DÍA to, in collaboration with Cáritas, channel donations.
A total of 420,000 euros were distributed three days after the flood to families to replace their belongings. “We didn’t take money. Sestife gave us 12,000 euros and we asked him to deposit it in a hardware store where the paint drums were removed. “We were the most transparent.”

On his walk through Valleseco, Luis Febles shows the most affected areas, such as Las Cuevas, where the water washed out the access road.
