The Municipality of Buenavista del Norte recently organized an open day for community gardens, which the local government (SSP-CC) defines as «a space of coexistence around the small plot farming where a production is obtained for the self-consumption of the people who have requested space. With these orchards “in addition, citizen participation and it contributes to local development, promotes environmental education and food safety and promotes the recovery of traditional and sustainable agriculture».
During the day, the people who visited the farm observed the operation of the project and verified how in a short time, the plots are already at full capacity. Attendees were also able to enjoy a workshop given by Naturally Marguiin which, through the production of vegetable drinks«the acquisition of healthy eating habits was promoted».
At the end of the day, the new gardeners received an initiation manual that offers the essential guidelines to begin the adventure of growing their own food and a compost bin to manage the waste from each plot. The following common activities were also set to be carried out: the design of the community plot and an upcoming visit to the urban gardens of Tacoronte and to the community vermicomposting project that is being developed in the city of Acentejo.
According to the councilor responsible for the Citizen Participation area of the Buenavista del Norte City Council, Esteban Lorenzo (SSP), “This project is important because it promotes not only agroecological awareness, but also highlights social coexistence through cultivation.” A municipal initiative that, in addition, “contributes to improving the quality of life of citizens and the regeneration of spaces in our environment, enriching them with healthy and environmental values.”
