Arona City Council will place 20 cameras in Las Verónicas

The works to place 20 security cameras in the area of Las Verónicas, of Playa de Las Américas, will be held during the summer. The announcement was made public yesterday by the municipal government of Arona, informing that the specifications that will govern the call for the competition for these works have been drawn up. Such a tender will take place once the settlement of the 2021 Budget is approved, something that should take place “soon”. The local Corporation has funding to locate the cameras between Rafael Puig Lluvina avenue and Francisco Andrade Fumero street.

The project is “a historical vindication of the aronera citizenship.” Especially, the accommodation and restaurant sector of Playa de Las Américas has been demanding the installation of these video surveillance cameras for decades. For its installation, the local government has been authorized by the Government Delegation since last May.

The representative body of the central government in the Islands also gave the go-ahead, last November, to the placement of another 16 video surveillance cameras in El Fraile. The drafting of the technical specifications for the bidding for this work is advanced and is the response to “years of demands from the neighbors”.

The Councilor for Security, Francisco Marichal, defends that “we have always worked realistically and transparently, explaining the steps we take at all times.” “From the beginning we said that the video surveillance cameras of Las Verónicas would be put out to tender this summer and so it will be.” The mayor values that the time that is missing is equivalent to “a very short wait” compared to “the decades of delay” caused by previous governments.

This pronouncement coincides with the criticism of Daniel González Rov, councilor of the Popular Party (PP), for whom “It is unfortunate that public opinion is manipulated in this way”. He recalled that the local government “already made announcements about the installation of cameras in this area” in 2018, “and a little over a year ago, the Councilor for Security and the mayor himself assured in the press that they already had authorization to the Government Delegation to install them».

The installation of surveillance cameras in the Las Verónicas area “has been a historical demand from neighbors, merchants and hoteliers from all over the area.” With this premise, the mayor of the PP maintains that “it is a mockery of citizens to make announcements that, in reality, are empty words, because this municipal government is absolutely incapable not only of managing public resources properly, but also of keeping its word », concludes González Rov.
