SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 27. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The training ship ‘Juan Sebastián Elcano’ will make landfall this Tuesday, March 29, in the waters near Santa Cruz de Tenerife during its XCIV Training Cruise.
This has been reported by the Canary Islands Naval Command in a statement in which it adds that it is the third and last journey of those that have been framed in the commemoration of the V Centenary of the First Around the World between 2020 and 2022.
Thus, the ship will pass through the vicinity of Tenerife on its route prior to crossing the Atlantic, where there will be a meeting at sea with the Maritime Action Ship ‘Rayo’ to commemorate the fact that Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the first port of call of the expedition that Magellan began on August 10, 1519 and ended by Juan Sebastián de Elcano aboard the ship ‘Victoria’ in the port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz) on September 6, 1522, thus completing the first circumnavigation of the world.
For his part, Magellan’s project initially consisted of being able to reach the Moluccas from the West, instead of from the East, and thus open a new passage to the Spice Islands.
This project was accepted by the Crown of Castile and on March 22, 1518, capitulations were signed in Valladolid for the expedition in which Magellan was granted the title of governor and advance of all the lands that he ‘discovered’.
All in all, the Magellan-Elcano expedition is considered one of the most important naval feats in the history of mankind, being the starting point of the era of exploration of the Pacific and in which the members of the expedition showed great courage and bravery that amazed the world.
