The Cabildo, with the favorable votes of all the groups except the PSOE, approved two motions of the Canarian Coalition and Sí Podemos Canarias to reject the recent pro-Moroccan turn of the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, in the Western Sahara conflict. In addition to supporting the Saharawi people, the plenary agreement demands the holding of the self-determination referendum under the umbrella of the UN and opposes the “blackmail of Morocco”. The nationalist councilor Antolín Bueno defended the motion, which had tense moments, such as when he called Sánchez a “puppet” in the face of socialist anger, whose position was argued by the councilors Liskel Álvarez and Aarón Afonso.

The initiative urges the Government of Spain and its president to “rectify their decision to support Morocco in its claim to declare Western Sahara as an autonomy within its own territory.” Bueno asked the Socialist Group to abstain as his colleagues did this week in the Parliament of the Canary Islands “so as not to suffer a historical stain.”

Agreement to support Ukraine, maintain Post Office and integrate private school in places from 0 to 3 years

Afonso defended himself, precisely with that parliamentary agreement, and insisted that “we have never stopped supporting the Saharawi people.” For his part, David Carballo, from Sí Podemos Canarias, ironically alluded during the debate to the refrain of the song Cuervo ingenuo, popularized by singer-songwriter Javier Krahe, and its catchy: «White man speaks with a snake’s tongue».

consummate betrayal

Bueno criticized the position of the PSOE in Tenerife, which “has bowed to what they say from Madrid.” “They had the opportunity to show that they are with the Saharawi people but they have consummated their betrayal by voting against our proposal”, he sentenced.

The approved initiative also urges the Government of the Canary Islands “to make an official pronouncement on the conflict” and the Government of Spain “to fulfill its obligations as the administering power of Western Sahara.” In the latter case, moreover, “to ensure the culmination of the decolonization process, with a solution agreed by both parties, within the framework of the United Nations.” Applause from the entire opposition after the final result in their favor: 20 to 11.

There was institutional agreement on other issues such as support for the people of Ukraine, maintaining the Post Office service on the island and integrating private schools in the supply of places for the education of children from 0 to 3 years old.

CC-PNC celebrates the support for the continuity of Correos in Tenerife “to avoid the dismantling of the offices and guarantee public service.” Requests the reopening of the headquarters located in Plaza 25 de Julio and the offices of Tenerife Sur Airport and Alcalá (Guía de Isora)

On the other hand, the Cabildo urges that the public offer of children’s education places include private centers. Their representatives were in the plenary hall when the final agreement was read.

Finally, the Cabildo shows its unanimous support for the Ukrainian people in the face of the Russian invasion. An institutional motion recognizes the resistance of its citizens and promotes help and collaboration with third-sector entities on the Island that serve refugees from the diaspora of that country.

Appearance

Arriaga and Belda

  • Enrique Arriaga’s appearance in Titsa’s balance sheet ended with two bland hours of data and a dialectical battle. María José Belda denounced that she had been “thrown out” of the Cuevas Blancas headquarters and Arriaga made her ugly for having entered through an unauthorized area. In his balance he was “proud” of the improvement in these almost three years.

New Counselor

Maria del Cristo Gonzalez

  • María del Cristo González promised as the new director of Sí Podemos Canarias, replacing Ruth Acosta.

electronic system

untrained

  • The electronic voting system returned after two years. The 31 directors were noticed untrained, already in person, after finishing the capacity restrictions. Voting had to be repeated up to six times.

Covid-19

Rejection of extra measures

  • Extraordinary measures to face the post-covid era were rejected. They were presented by CC and the PP joined.

Waste

compensation

  • A compensation of 1.3 million euros was approved to pay the cost of the tanks that carry the wastewater discharges from El Rosario, Arafo, Candelaria, Güímar and Fasnia.

Covid-19

resignations

  • Belda asked Arriaga for his resignation and the PP offered him his disapproval. He also requested that of President Félix Fariña (CC) in the discussion about the cost of the third rail of the TF-5. Pedro Martín won the enthusiasm of his bench by stirring.
