The El Rosario City Council has begun to install thirteen semi-automatic external defibrillators in public facilities, both administrative, sports or cultural, and in vehicles of the Local Police and the Civil Protection Association. In this way, the municipality becomes cardioprotected against possible cases of cardiorespiratory arrest among its population, in which an intervention as quickly as possible can be the difference between life and death.
The accidental mayor and Councilor for Security, Sara Cabello, explains that «With this measure we guarantee a quick action in case of emergencies, both our citizens and those who visit us, and we follow the recommendations of the Government of the Canary Islands to provide this type of sanitary products to public agencies.
The lobby of the City Council of El Rosario, in La Esperanza, has been the first public building in which one of these defibrillators has been installed and during the next few days they will continue to be placed in the rest of the planned units: the building of the old consistory, the Llano Blanco Mayor’s Office, the Maximino Bacallado Soccer Field, the municipal sports centers, the Machado field, the El Rosario House of Culture, the El Chorrillo Youth House and police and Civil Protection vehicles . The company awarded the tender was Rojo Medical Export and Distribution Sociedad Limitada, for an amount of 21,293 euros.
In addition, Cabello highlights that the installation of the defibrillators will be accompanied by 40 training courses among municipal employees of the different areas, as well as the directives and training team of the municipality’s sports clubs, who will be instructed in the correct use of these devices. , “Which are based on a very simple mechanism, but which, in an emergency, must be applied correctly as quickly as possible since reaction time is key”.
It also happens that El Rosario will exceed the national average for this type of device. Currently in Spain there are five units for every 10,000 inhabitants, while in El Rosario, once they are all installed, the average will be 7.4 depending on its population.
Semi-automatic external defibrillators are essential medical devices for the prevention of situations that demand urgent health care with risk to life, in which it is possible to reduce mortality with rapid and efficient treatment. «Due to its high incidencea, it is worth highlighting cardiac arrest, which is generally related to ischemic heart disease. During an episode of this type, fatal arrhythmias can occur, such as ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia, in which it is scientifically recognized that their most effective treatment is early electrical defibrillation ”, indicated the City Council.
