SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 23. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, stated on the second day of the Debate on the State of Nationality that the Canary Islands are “more prepared” to face the “setbacks of the future”, but he has warned the four groups that make up the Pact of the Flowers that difficult months are coming.
“We are not going to have it easy in the coming months, but the commitment to union, to putting the defense of the canaries ahead of differences and walking to end the legislature with political stability is key to the best response to the circumstances of the present,” said Ángel Víctor Torres.
In response to the groups that support the Government -PSOE, NC, Sí Podemos Canarias and ASG-, the president thanked them for their “rigorous” reflections and added that in the face of any adversity “the important thing is that we are united”.
Thus, just as he asks the opposition groups for a “unity exercise” with respect to the government’s action, he asked the same thing to the four forces that make up the Pact of Flowers “to walk, respond, resolve and give an account of the current situation in light of the reality that the Canary Islands are experiencing”.
Regarding the intervention of the Socialist Parliamentary Group, Ángel Víctor Torres stressed that Europe, faced with the migratory phenomenon, has to understand that there will be “more diasporas” as there have been in the past and hopes that it will learn from the humanitarian drama that is being experienced with the war in Ukraine so that the response given to those who are also suffering from armed conflicts in Africa is identical.
In another order of things, Ángel Víctor Torres stressed that there has been an “obvious” effort in the basic pillars of the welfare state -health, education, social rights-, and he agreed with the socialist spokesperson, Nayra Alemán, that betting on the economy, tourism and infrastructure is “indisputable”.
In this sense, he affirmed that the strategy used by some of, in the face of a difficulty, “looking at and blaming others” supposes “disregarding the responsibility of each one”, and he was convinced that this strategy “makes people’s lives worse to which we owe ourselves and that is to violate the will of the voters,” said Torres.
Regarding the criticism of why all the restrictions are lifted tomorrow, when there are still positive cases, Ángel Víctor Torres supported the fact that the latest epidemiological report concludes that the beds in the Canary Islands occupied by covid-19 patients have decreased by 18% and the cases in ICU 12%.
RELATIONS WITH MOROCCO.
In response to the NC spokesman, the president agreed that this is “the Government of energy transformation, of the 2030 Agenda and of the climate emergency”, which is now “urgency”.
Regarding his position on the Sahara, he alluded to the PNL that, as a deputy, voted in 2021 and that “today I maintain all its terms,” he assured. In relation to Pedro Sánchez’s letter, he said that it does not detract from “neither significance nor relevance”, but reiterated that good relations with Morocco “is good for the Canary Islands”.
In any case, he agreed that both the Foreign Minister and President Sánchez have to explain everything that happened, and not only in Parliament, but also in the Canary Islands. And, furthermore, he reiterated that no proposal made has any chance of progress if it is not accepted by the kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front. In his opinion, “the ideal thing would be for the conflict to be resolved.” “It’s not going to be easy. Fifty years prove it,” he added.
A COORDINATED RESPONSE.
Regarding the intervention of Manuel Marrero, spokesperson for the Sí Podemos Canarias Group, he shared the need for a coordinated response from the administrations to the problems of citizens. And he agreed with the defense of basic services, where “we are making a clear and firm commitment, which is to invest for the future,” he said. And regarding the Law of Historical Memory and the catalog of Francoist vestiges of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, he considered that it is only necessary to apply it.
Finally, he responded to the spokesman for the Agrupación Socialista Gomera, agreeing that “walking to end the legislature with political stability is key to the best response to the present circumstances.”
