Builders urge the planned hydroelectric plant in Güímar

The employer of the construction of Tenerife (Fepeco) urges the construction of a hydroelectric plant in the municipality of Güímar, similar to the one in Chira-Soria that advances in Gran Canaria. In a statement, the president of Fepeco, Óscar Izquierdo, yesterday showed his concern for “the obscurantism and the lack of audience for all the professional agents involved in the processing of the Reversible Pumping Hydroelectric Power Plant in Güímar».

“While the hydroelectric power plant in the south of Tenerife is still not advancing, the Chira-Soria power plant, in Gran Canaria, is taking the first steps towards its execution, which shows the strength of its institutions and the interest of Red Eléctrica de España and the Ministry of Ecological Transition for completing the structural infrastructures on the sister island. “We would already like the same interest and urgency for Tenerife,” concludes Izquierdo, who wonders if Red Eléctrica de España has sent the necessary report to the corresponding Ministry, which is mandatory to start the process. “Is there already a report from the National Markets and Competition Commission? When will the approval by the corresponding Ministry be? ”, Questions the spokesman for the Tenerife builders.

“We would like the urgency that Gran Canaria has for Tenerife”, according to the president of Fepeco

The Council of Tenerife and Red Eléctrica de España have been considering for years building a large hydroelectric plant in Güímar that will generate energy for more than a third of Tenerife. The Spanish multinational already even has a preliminary project for a plant that would strengthen the supply, the security of the system and would reinforce the use of renewable energies.

The location being considered for this hydroelectric power station These are some of the Güímar quarries where illegal extraction of aggregates was carried out for 17 years. In this case, which came to justice, four businessmen were sentenced to prison terms – between one year and three months and three and a half years – for causing irreversible damage to the environment. This hydroelectric power plant project is considered “ideal” to recover some of those huge holes left by the illegal activities of these sandboxes.

«The positive effects provided by a pumped hydroelectric plant in an isolated system, such as the Canary Islands, can be summed up in an increase in the supply guaranteeincreased integration of renewable energies, as well as energy independence and cost savings”, highlighted Óscar Izquierdo in the Fepeco statement.
