The Ministry of the Interior has registered, processed and granted a total of 5,830 temporary protections to those displaced by the war in Ukraine who have sought refuge in Spain in the first week after the activation, on March 10, of the emergency procedure for refugees .
As reported by the department headed by Fernando Grande-Marlaska, these are the figures recorded until this Thursday, March 17, and he explains that 2,416 of them have been processed at the reception and reception centers in Madrid and Alicante, while 3,414 have been registered. and resolved in the 54 National Police stations that have been enabled for these procedures throughout Spain.
Madrid, with 1,603; Valencian Community, with 918; Andalusia, with 827; and Catalonia 474, are the autonomous communities that receive the most requests, according to the Ministry.
These figures have been announced by the minister himself who, this Friday, has made a visit to the device deployed by the National Police and by the Office of Asylum and Refuge (OAR) in the Reception and Reception Center located in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid). ).
“Our job is to guarantee people’s rights and give them the temporary protection permits that come with residence permits, work permits and the possibility of having all social services, education and health as soon as possible,” he explained. Grande-Marlaska in statements to the media.
After thanking the work of “all public officials, of all institutions and services” who, in his opinion, “are setting an example of professionalism and dedication typical of a supportive country”, the minister denied that the centers are overwhelmed and, in any case, he has pointed out that the personal means “that are necessary” will be increased.
“We have had a significant number for a week and there are no queues or problems in that sense. We have all the means, working the necessary hours to guarantee the dignity of these refugees,” he insisted.
As reported by Interior, in the reception centers of Pozuelo de Alarcón and Alicante, twenty-five national police officers from the general Immigration and Scientific Police stations and a team from the OAR work to register and process requests for temporary protection of those displaced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
FIRST ACTIVATION OF TEMPORARY PROTECTION
Grande-Marlaska, and the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, José Luis Escrivá, signed on March 9 the order that develops the urgent procedure for the recognition of temporary protection.
This order was decreed in compliance with the agreement reached on March 4 by the Council of Ministers of the Interior of the European Union, which agreed for the first time in history the application of the Temporary Protection Directive.
Interior highlights that, by virtue of this rule, applicants can go to these authorized points where National Police officials take their identification data and other elements, a procedure for which language interpreters are available, and in which they are issues a receipt accrediting your request for protection, which also includes an assigned NIE.
The request is processed by the Asylum and Refuge Office of the Ministry of the Interior and resolved within a maximum period of 24 hours.
In addition, it points out that the resolution includes residence authorization and, in the case of applicants of legal age, work authorization. The resolution is notified to the applicant electronically whenever possible, by post or by personal appearance before police stations or foreigners’ offices.
