The Association of Carpet Makers of Villa de La Orotava presented the program of acts and actions to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the making of flower carpets in its streets in honor of Corpus Christi. In the words of his president, Leo Rodriguez«We could not let a date like this pass to value the good work of the artists from the village, who with their hands give life to the cobbled pavement, transforming each street into works of art».
Since in 1847 the Monteverde family began to carpet the passage of Corpus Christi, La Orotava it preserves the spirit of those who on Corpus Christi Thursday, and even long before, get “hands on the flowers” so that the splendor that makes this ephemeral art a unique festival is not lost.
Agustin Monteverderepresentative of the family that promoted this tradition, explained that there is a document that confirms that the current route of the Corpus Christi procession was established in 1536, at the request of a family member to the ecclesiastical leaders of that time.
After more than five years, the association continues to carry out a solidarity project with groups that work for equality and diversity. This year is the carpet for solidarity with La Palma, which will take place in April. A group of children who lost their homes will be invited to La Orotava and the La Orotava Carpet Ephemeral Art Interpretation Center. In their courtyard, they will be raising funds with a rug on display, starting the second week of April. It is about visitors being able to make donations. In addition, the association adds Now it’s La Palma, a slogan with which t-shirts are sold.
