The creative freedom of the pianist Lucía Rey arrives this week in the Islands

lucia king, Outstanding pianist and composer who has performed successfully on many national and international stages with her extraordinary live performance, is Mousikê’s guest for this month of March. Specifically, it will be the next days 17, 18 and 19 when he will visit the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Tenerife to give three masterclasses, free of charge with prior registration, and offer a single concert with his band Lucía Rey Trío at the Guiniguada Theater in the capital of Gran Canaria. . An appointment that will take place next Thursday at 8:00 p.m.

The versatile artist, after completing her studies in Modern Music and Jazz at the School of Creative Music and Contemporary Dance at the RCPD in Madrid, continued her training in Cuba and New York. He traveled to Havana in 2005 to specialize in Latin Piano and Jazz at the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba and later to New York, at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and at The Collective School of Music, studying with professors such as Bruce Barth, Barry Harris, Bob Quaranta, and sharing the stage with numerous artists from the New York scene.

Her musical career has led her to play along with established musicians such as Antonio Serrano or Celia Mur with the Big Band of Granada, to accompany numerous national artists such as Sole Giménez and to share projects with international artists such as the one led by the Cuban singer Eme Alfonso and the Project Women of the World. Outside the jazz scene, his work as a pianist, keyboardist and cover of musical direction in the musicals of Madrid’s Gran Vía stands out. Today I can not get up and Who cares. Pianist and performer at the play Treason of the Kamikaze Theater company.

In his current musical trio bet, Lucía Rey’s creations stand out for a mestizo sensibility that encompasses styles and sources of inspiration from very varied origins: from classical music to pop or blues, Latin music or flamenco, all from the most current jazz approach. On his first album Reflection you can feel the variety of influences that the artist has been collecting throughout her career, interpreted with a free spirit. This album premiered in 2017 at Bogui Jazz (Madrid) and in a very short time the project became part of the most important jazz circuits, festivals and venues in Spain (Getxo Jazz Festival, Jazz Festival on the Coast, International Festival Madrid Jazz, Lugo Jazz Festival, Cádiz Jazz Festival, JAZZ I AM…), and now in full internationalization (Jazz Plaza Festival (Cuba), Jazz In The Park (Romania), EUNIC Festival (Bucharest).

And it is that, in each direct performance of Lucía Rey Trío, you can perceive the creative freedom that she grants herself and her musicians, each of her concerts being different with a feeling always new and fresh managing to create a dialogue between the music and the public. She will do so, once again, in the only concert included in this visit to the Archipelago accompanied by the double bassist Ander García and the drummer Andrés Litwin. On your current concert proposal The themes that will be part of his new album also coexist, adding electronic effects and merging in a clearer and more direct way the musical folklore of southern Spain and Mediterranean music with contemporary jazz. An appointment that will take place this Thursday day 17 at 8:00 p.m. at the Guiniguada Theater in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (tickets on sale now at the theater box office and at https://www3.gobiernodecanarias.org/cultura/ocio/teatroguiniguada/eventos/master-class-lucia-rey/).

As far as their master classes it means, under the heading merge and adapted to all levels, Lucía Rey will share her knowledge to enrich interpretation, improvisation and composition through the fusion of different musical styles (flamenco, Latin jazz, classical, blues, pop…) within the most current jazz perspective. He will do so by applying the most representative resources of each style (harmonic progressions, rhythm, melodies, articulation, phrasing…), and in his own words, “we will see how we can transform a song into different versions, use these materials in our arrangements, in the focus of our solos and on new ideas for our creations”, because for the artist “fusion brings us closer to having more knowledge of music at all levels, enjoying it and appreciating it in all its dimensions”.
