One deceased, another missing and four injured in accidents on the Canary coast, in a single day

the islands of The iron, Tenerife and Gran Canaria They have been the scenes of four accidents on the coast, with the result of one person deceased, another missing and another four with injuries of different considerations. With these latest events, the Canary Islands already register 13 people dead by drowning and one missing so far this year. This morning the search work was resumed on the Tenerife coast.

In addition, there is the circumstance that the Government of the Canary Islands maintains the yellow warning activated due to an adverse coastal phenomenon, with waves that can reach five meters, a situation in force throughout the weekend.

According to statistics compiled by the platform `Canary Islands, 1500 Km of Coast´, in 80% of the aquatic accidents that end in death, the bather had entered the water with a patent bad state of the sea. It is the leading cause of death by submersion worldwide.

FOUR INCIDENTS IN A SINGLE DAY

Around 9:30 a.m. yesterday, a woman, apparently of foreign nationality, lost her life when she bathed in the natural pool of Pozo de Las Calcosas, on the island of El Hierro. A large wave expelled her from the perimeter of the pool into the open sea, losing her life minutes later, despite the efforts of the SUC health services to recover her.

A few hours later, also in a natural pool, in this case in Charco del Palo, Bajamar, Tenerife, two swimmers were in trouble. Alerted the 112 emergency services, a GES helicopter was able to rescue one of those affected, presenting erosions and hypothermia. The other disappeared into the depths of a sea with very strong waves and current.

At almost the same time, on the island of Gran Canaria, Red Cross troops were activated to rescue a young bather who had been isolated in a cave in La Puntilla, on the capital’s Las Canteras beach. Fortunately, his quick intervention prevented a fatal outcome. The strong waves, again, did not make him give up. He suffered moderate abrasions, contusions and hypothermia.

Finally, on the Tenerife coast of Adeje, Salvamento Marítimo activates a boat and a helicopter to proceed to the rescue of another bather dragged by a tidal wave. He was evacuated and brought ashore with minor injuries.
