SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 11. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the Tenerife Science and Technology Park (PCTT) and Ingeniera Soy, celebrate this Friday and tomorrow Saturday a new edition of the FIRST LEGO League Canarias Qualifying Tournament, the international program that promotes scientific and technological vocations among young people from different learning experiences.

A total of 220 contestants from 37 teams and two categories participate in this tenth consecutive meeting held in Tenerife.

The island councilor for Innovation, Enrique Arriaga, highlighted in the presentation that “this tournament seeks innovative talent, minds that face any challenge from a scientific or technological perspective, and this contest allows us to discover brilliant young people with important scientific vocations every year.”

In addition, the councilor pointed out that “it is a very special edition for everyone because the Science Park celebrates this year 15 years since its start-up, an anniversary in which various actions will be carried out and this is one of them”.

In the FLL Explore category, boys and girls from six to nine years old, 21 teams participate, of which 19 teams are from Tenerife and two from Gran Canaria, and 16 FLL Challenge teams, young people from ten to 16 years old, of which 14 are from Tenerife and two from Gran Canaria.

It will be a face-to-face tournament, which will take place on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at the Colegio Hispano Británico where both the FLL Explore and the FLL Challenge teams will present their innovation project and in parallel on Saturday morning the FLL Challenge teams will participate in the robot game in the multipurpose room of the IACTEC building of the Tenerife Science and Technology Park, at its headquarters in Las Mantecas, located in the municipality of La Laguna.

For her part, Raquel Lucía Pérez highlighted that “the Tenerife Science and Technology Park, in addition to the regional competitions, has also organized three national tournaments and one international First Lego League tournament” and recalled that in 2025 there will be a need in Europe for eight million workers in the STEAM areas.

For this reason, the Cabildo de Tenerife, through PCTT, and through programs such as FLL, the INfuture Challenge and CEDeI encourage and enhance motivation in young people in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

SOLVE REAL WORLD PROBLEMS

FIRST LEGO League each season challenges young people to solve real-world problems such as recycling, water management or renewable energy through the opportunities offered by science and technology.

This season, the ‘CARGO CONNECT Challenge’ invites teams to learn how cargo is transported, sorted and delivered to its destinations, from long distances to the ‘last mile’.

In addition, it challenges them to find solutions to rethink transport as more demands are placed on transport systems, faster, more efficient or more sustainable, a competition in which more than 680,000 young people in 110 countries around the world participate. .

The educational program promotes two areas of work, the ‘Innovation Project’ and the ‘Design of a Robot’ capable of overcoming the greatest number of missions on an official board that is the same for all countries, all with the presence of the ‘Values Fundamental FIRST’, values such as teamwork, respect for others and friendly competition.

This tournament is co-organized by the University of La Laguna, and the Colegio Hispano Británico, CIFP César Manrique, Isola, Tirma, Fauca, Gateway Tic, Volcano Teide and Alonso y Alonso collaborate.

The closing will take place in the IACTEC building where the medals and trophies will be awarded to the teams participating in the tournament.
