SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 11. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands and vice-president of the Conference of Regional Legislative Assemblies of the EU (Calre), Gustavo Matos, stressed this Friday, in relation to the crisis derived from the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the commitment of this organization with the democratic values and with the founding principles of the EU.
Matos participated in the extraordinary meeting of Calre requested by the Parliament of the Canary Islands on the current situation in Ukraine, held electronically under the chairmanship of Jean-Claude Marcourt and with the interventions of Chiara Cardoletti, representative for Italy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Nations for Refugees, and Pascale Joannin, Director General of the Robert Schuman Foundation.
Presidents of regional assemblies and parliaments with legislative capacity from Spain, Germany, Italy, Austria, Portugal, Finland and Belgium also participated.
“In this meeting we have expressed, on behalf of the 200 million inhabitants that these parliaments represent in the EU, our support for the decisions that the European institutions have been adopting, as well as our solidarity and support for the Ukrainian people,” said Matos.
The meeting discussed the reception of refugees and, also, Ukraine’s application for accession to the European Union, as well as the repercussion of the situation on the work of the Calre groups.
All the presidencies showed the unwavering support of their parliaments and assemblies for the Ukrainian people.
“The attack perpetrated by the Government of Russia is an obvious violation of the Charter of the United Nations and the Minsk agreements”, is expressed from Calre, who conveys his concern about the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and invites all regions of the European Union to express its solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
